Spain ranks second worldwide in oncological assistance

Spain is, after the United States, the country with the most certified hospital centers and that have been internationally recognized for offering and dispensing quality care to their cancer patients, according to the analysis carried out by the Foundation Excellence and Quality of Oncology (ECO ) and the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO, for its acronym in English).

“There is a growing interest throughout the world to reach a quality standard that guarantees that health problems can be addressed effectively and efficiently, with little variability between different practices and professionals.” The ECO Foundation offers Spanish hospitals possibility to self-evaluate and participate in this international certification process to guarantee analysis, comparison and continuous improvement, “said the president of the ECO Foundation and head of the department of Medical Oncology of IVO, Vicente Guillem.

Thanks to the cooperation promoted in 2015 between the ECO Foundation and ASCO, Spanish hospitals can participate in this program that accredits their oncological care. At this point, the secretary of the ECO Foundation and head of the Medical Oncology service of the University Clinical Hospital of Santiago de Compostela, Rafael López, recalled that Spain does not have a national certification program for quality medical care in Oncology, so who has indicated that the agreement offers Spanish oncology centers the opportunity to obtain a highly recognized certification in this field.
